Later there is a scene when Briony visits them both in the London flat to apologise, because she has been to the wedding and realised that she was mistaken, causing his wrongful conviction and separating them. THAT scene was fiction and Briony wrote it after they were both dead, to? 'give' them a 'happy' ending to atone for what she did. Twisted.
