Actually, you're partly correct. The government DOES have the constitutional authority to print money, but they don't, because they gave that power to the Federal Reserve in 1913, which is no more federal than Federal Express.? If you believe the Fed is a government agency, then you need to get educated. Look at a dollar bill. It says "Federal Reserve Note." It doesn't say "United States Note", as it would if the government created it. The Fed pays the treasury a fee to print their FRN's.

Of course I know everything else is not Keynesian, such as Monetarism which holds that the very contraction of the money supply during economic contraction, which you espouse, is held up as the primary cause for which the great depression was as long and severe as it was, due to the? federal reserve's tightening of the money supply. Yes it is. The Treasury has the power to 'print' money through spending and taxing. The bulk of the money that is added to the private sector, which is what I assume when you refer to money creation, is created by? the Treasury NOT the Fed.

If you keep the same money supply regardless of where the economy is going, you're either going to have massive deflation or inflation. If the economy is growing, the money supply must also grow with it, otherwise you get massive deflation. The Fed may well be an "independent agency" but the government could choose not to deal with it. It could print its own money. This would be much better than 'borrowing; it from the Fed, since they would not have to? pay interest on it, but it would then make it plain that the government was simply inflating and they wouldn't like that. If they 'borrow' it, most people won't realise what they are up to. The government could close the Fed tomorrow if it wanted to.

I urge you to watch THE MONEY MASTERS for a better view of the racket known as the Federal Reserve. They actually don't operate under the direction of the state, although that's what they want us all to believe. As Alan Greenspan admitted several years ago to? Charlie Rose, the Fed is an "independent agency" (which means it's private) and that no agency of government can overrule their actions. I understand that the Fed prints the money (or types the numbers on the computer) but it does so under the direction of the state. Similarly, the fractional reserve banking system can only exist with the blessing of the state. In a free market - one where banks would not be bailed out with taxpayers' money and would be allowed to fail - would you deal with a bank that? had few or no deposits? Of course not.

Yes, I was actually employed running an 'economic resource center', where I was the official on staff tutor for the college's economics students, and they were being taught pure Keynesianism. And I have said a couple of times here, wages do NOT fall if the money supply is stable, they only fall if the money supply? 'contracts', which is not the same thing. And so mortgages do not grow in real terms, they stay the same. And fiat is about to fail, spectacularly.

You don't need government regulations for any of those. The market can regulate itself for all of those things. Price fixing? Impossible? because of competition. Anti-trust? The ONLY kind of capitalism is the completely unregulated kind. If any government regulations existed then it would NOT be capitalism - It would be a "mixed? economy", which is the dominant political-economic system in the world today. Under Capitalism, the government does one thing and one thing only: Protect individual rights. It does that by running the army, the police and the court system - All under an objective rule of law. What I mean was there is no way of determining on an individual level who is in it for more than money or how much money plays a role in their employment decision. Even if you were to survey them, they might just misrepresent themselves, their are a lot of potential cognitive biases that would suggest they might. What the Senator was probably referring to was the collusion between Big Pharma and the FDA to never cure any chronic diseases and keep people on pharmaceutical drugs for their entire life so that Pharma can make billions off people's disease. In the most simple explanation you eliminate the welfare state by eliminating the incentives for people to be on welfare. One way would be to have better incentives, like working which would mean high rate of employment. Another would be through private charities. But the negative income tax is still interesting in one way: if you're going to have a welfare state (and therefore taxation), benefits? in cash are more efficient and flexible than benefits in kind. Instead of having bureaucrats and rules for housing, food stamps, unemployment benefits, etc, you only need the IRS to dispatch checks. We went 137? years with no income tax. Article 1 section 9 - "No Capitation, or other direct, Tax shall be laid, unless in Proportion to the Census or Enumeration herein before directed to be taken." Seems we are in agreement then... well almost. I don't think there's any empirical evidence of there being any major monopolies in unregulated markets. You'll be hard pressed to find more than a few exceptions. Monopolies arise almost exclusively due to government privilege, either by lobbying for tariffs, licensing or? other regulations that hinder small companies from getting a foot in the market. That is truly unfair. In a free market the government doesn't pick winners or losers. :)

It is not a problem of who builds the rail but how best to use up resources. There is no point in? spending millions in running parallel rail lines if trains are operating at half capacity. The environmental damage alone would cause big problems. The situation you have described of renting the tracks is indeed the best option. The UK Govt does this by offering franchising rights to the most competitive firms. My point is that an unregulated market would either be wasteful or unfair (a monopoly).

It's an assumption made with little to no evidence to support it. There has been the successful construction of rail networks. Such ventures are very capital intensive. It would have taken a lot of investors coming together in order? to create the infrastructure, doable, but most likely not something to be replicated on a large basis. Competition among these kinds of firms would be a good thing too. Driving down the costs of these type of essential services is what improves life for all.

I don't mean to butt in on the discussion, just happened to read the comment and was interested. Why is it a problem to have more rail? Usually governments always say "we? need more and better infrastructure". Does it really matter then who builds it? Or, a compromise would be that the government lays down the infrastructure (the rail) and private railroad companies rent time on it and compete to provide the best service. This would be analogous to companies renting out space at a shopping mall.

I'm not sure what you're getting at? How could it be a fiction? Lets take the example of the UK rail network. If unregulated private industry was allowed to make all rail provisions it would lead to a situation where multiple firms are laying down side by side railway tracks in order to compete for consumers. This is clearly a inefficient use of resources as it requires the duplication of? infrastructure. Therefore it is necessary for Govt. to intervene in order to correct any market failure.

Disclosure would be good business, but not necessary. Public intrusion into your private space is much different then a theater installing surveillance to help enforce its policies and the policies of the agents they buy their? films from. I agree. another thing that academics point is that prices in the 20´s were constant and didn´t rise or fall, they were stable. What the fail to consider is that? although there was price stability, that didnt meant that there hasn´t been inflation. Prices didn´t skyrockted because there was a lot of productivity in the US at that time, so the productivity neted out the inflation. Also the Fed in the 20´s fix the interest rates to low and that was a cause of the Buisiness Cycle and the GD.

Even though I'm a huge fan of Friedman, I'd have to disagree with his view on the great depression and go with? the Austrians. The deflation wasn't the reason of the GD but a consequence. The Fed expanded the money supply during the 20's, but since the dollar was pegged to gold, it had to go back to the same level when it busts.(or meet half way as FRD did in 1933 with the confiscation and price jump) Am-I-rite?

Once again, if a company publicly appears robust it may attract more investors, like during the dot com bubble, even if insiders know that the? business model is not sustainable. So what happens? The price goes up, more people invest but sooner or later the bubble pops, and those investors lose much more than they would have otherwise, had they the best, current and accurate information earlier. The fundamental question is why would any moral action be necessitous for fulfilled living if we live in an amoral, non-telic, accidental universe. The only "rational" reason for morality is a reference point beyond the individual that individuals and groups may discover through revelation, but can never create. If we can create what morality is,? or determine what morality should look like, then it is ultimately subjective and determined by individual whims.

I think most people are in a constant state of lying and modifying truth without realizing it. They do it to spare feelings and cushion reality. It may be well intentioned but it is as fraudulent as those who lie to take advantage of others. Scrupulous honesty is a learned discipline, requiring slavish adherence. For that reason, diplomacy? becomes the only vehicle to spare sensitive feelings.
