Estonian Prime Minister Laar came to my office the other day to recount his country's remarkable transformation. He described a nation of people who are harder-working, more virtuous -- yes, more virtuous, because the? market punishes immorality -- and more hopeful about the future than they've ever been in their history. I asked him where his government got the idea for these reforms. Do you know what he replied: "We read Milton Friedman and F. A. Hayek." -U.S. Representative Dick Armey
By: jamo387. on 26 May 12, 17:12:46
There is no figure who had more of an influence, no person had more of an influence on the intellectuals behind the Iron Curtain than Friedrich Hayek. His books were translated and published by the underground and black market editions, read widely, and undoubtedly influenced the climate of opinion that ultimately brought about the collapse of the Soviet Union. ?Milton Friedman*? (Hoover Institution)
By: jamo387. on 26 May 12, 17:12:33
Friedman was a great friend and fan of the Austrian economists including Hayek and Von Mises? with whom he often collaborated. They differ only in matters of degree. They are basically on the same team.
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 17:02:48
I am fully correct. As for my apparent belief that the Fed is a government agency, you need to stop arguing against strawmen.? I never said anything of the sort. You clearly didn't understand my use of quotation marks around PRINT. The only thing physical that the Treasury produces are coins, but it actually adds a lot more money to the private sector than the Fed does.
By: jamo387. on 26 May 12, 17:01:05
It is backed? by nothing. NO gold there, just paper.
By: jamo387. on 26 May 12, 17:00:19
That is why he called it a "self inflicted disease". He knew? it was deliberate.
By: BRYAN351. on 26 May 12, 14:08:49
Actually, you're partly correct. The government DOES have the constitutional authority to print money, but they don't, because they gave that power to the Federal Reserve in 1913, which is no more federal than Federal Express.? If you believe the Fed is a government agency, then you need to get educated. Look at a dollar bill. It says "Federal Reserve Note." It doesn't say "United States Note", as it would if the government created it. The Fed pays the treasury a fee to print their FRN's.
By: Panpiper. on 26 May 12, 13:55:26
Of course I know everything else is not Keynesian, such as Monetarism which holds that the very contraction of the money supply during economic contraction, which you espouse, is held up as the primary cause for which the great depression was as long and severe as it was, due to the? federal reserve's tightening of the money supply. You do not get to play central planner of the economy and expect to do anything other than royally fuck it up.
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 11:57:15
LOL, glad someone agrees with me. I don't understand why whenever LibertyPen uploads a video of Milton Friedman, the Paulestinian Austrians swarm here like a pack of wolves, to start spouting off nonsensical economic theory. They don't even? represent well-regarded Austrian economic thought of today, because they're always suspicious of the state, which they think is illegitimate. As for the GOP, it's their fault for not challenging Paul's monetary policy, so now they look like anarchists.
By: mrjercan2. on 26 May 12, 11:29:07
I'm glad to finally see someone else that? can put these Austrian/Paulbots in their place. I am so sick of them. I hate even calling it the "austrian school of thought" to me it sort of dignifies their moronic economic philosophy. It's sad that their economic philosophy is what has caught on in the GOP and not more of Milton Friedman's ideas. There is still time though!
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 11:18:11
Yes it is. The Treasury has the power to 'print' money through spending and taxing. The bulk of the money that is added to the private sector, which is what I assume when you refer to money creation, is created by? the Treasury NOT the Fed.
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 11:12:59
Do you know that not? everything that is in mainstream economics is Keynesian? If you keep the same money supply regardless of where the economy is going, you're either going to have massive deflation or inflation. If the economy is growing, the money supply must also grow with it, otherwise you get massive deflation. If the economy is contracting, the money supply must be constricted with it, otherwise you get massive inflation. You guys always make predictions every four years that fiat fails
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 11:07:09
Your views are completely ridiculous and lacking in any reality. Who do you want to control the money supply? Gold has failed. Get over? it. The public rightly rejects someone who actually wants to increase the size of their mortgages. What you are proposing is pure and cruel stupidity.
By: Pwecko. on 26 May 12, 10:50:09
The Fed may well be an "independent agency" but the government could choose not to deal with it. It could print its own money. This would be much better than 'borrowing; it from the Fed, since they would not have to? pay interest on it, but it would then make it plain that the government was simply inflating and they wouldn't like that. If they 'borrow' it, most people won't realise what they are up to. The government could close the Fed tomorrow if it wanted to.
By: BRYAN351. on 26 May 12, 10:26:18
I urge you to watch THE MONEY MASTERS for a better view of the racket known as the Federal Reserve. They actually don't operate under the direction of the state, although that's what they want us all to believe. As Alan Greenspan admitted several years ago to? Charlie Rose, the Fed is an "independent agency" (which means it's private) and that no agency of government can overrule their actions. We should have a true free market, and banks, or any other business, should be allowed to fail.
By: Pwecko. on 26 May 12, 10:04:20
I understand that the Fed prints the money (or types the numbers on the computer) but it does so under the direction of the state. Similarly, the fractional reserve banking system can only exist with the blessing of the state. In a free market - one where banks would not be bailed out with taxpayers' money and would be allowed to fail - would you deal with a bank that? had few or no deposits? Of course not.
By: HotMustard420. on 26 May 12, 04:21:39
Buy gold and silver, and wait? for the dollar 2.0.
By: deadman12078. on 26 May 12, 03:17:55
I heard something similar when I was in school.... "If you deposited $20 a week in your savings account until you retire you will? have ~$250,000 when your retire" At this rate you'd actually loose money of you followed that plan, I tried it and at first I was making monkey and than the interest rates went to crap and I was gaining virtually nothing and with inflation was loosing money.
By: Panpiper. on 26 May 12, 03:14:52
Yes, I was actually employed running an 'economic resource center', where I was the official on staff tutor for the college's economics students, and they were being taught pure Keynesianism. And I have said a couple of times here, wages do NOT fall if the money supply is stable, they only fall if the money supply? 'contracts', which is not the same thing. And so mortgages do not grow in real terms, they stay the same. And fiat is about to fail, spectacularly.
By: Keeban3. on 26 May 12, 03:06:33
Allowing free people to? set interest rates is social engineering. And you don't know what sub-prime means. That's awesome. I love when people that disagree with me are ridiculous. It reinforces my views more than anything else ever could.
By: urb8t. on 26 May 12, 02:57:45
great speech!?
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 01:34:55
"Because gov't inflates..." You have just shown yourself to know absolutely nothing about economics. Listening to Alex Jones or Lew Rockwell doesn't mean you understand economics. Now you pay attention, infant, deflation arises from central? banks constricting the money supply too much. FFS, just go on wikipedia and learn something.
By: scalp340. on 26 May 12, 01:18:17
Don't you hear good? pay attention: deflation happens because gov't inflates in the first place. Deflation would be so small it would pretty much be unable to affect, if we didn't have such inflation. I'm done trying to convince you the sky is blue because you failed to learn the correct? colors. So I'm out, later.
By: gshooting. on 26 May 12, 01:02:10
You've just invented your own alternative knowledge system. No one is going to just wait for deflation to completely wreck the economy before it gets better. You clearly haven't learnt? your history.
By: scalp340. on 26 May 12, 00:42:16
"fiat is a suitable replacement" have you left the house in the last year? Deflation mostly exists because of a market correction because there was inflation before it (usually by the Fed/gov't). so you just proved my point. It is not nonsense at all, it's logic and history. sure, other govts? printed money for war before the US was off the gold standard. they printed money for their wars, so that has nothing to do with the price of tea in china. So once again; my point proven.
