Ok, I was wrong. That was a rather ignorant comment I made. Snead was a great player, one of my favorites. I saw play twice - Ed McMahon Open 1979. He shot 67 that day, his age; the next day (after the rain delay) he shot 66. Later that summer he? made the cut in the PGA held at Oakland Hills in Michigan. Saw shoot paired with Jerry Pate; they had a skin game going (during the tournament).

...It's really easy, when you're a great player trying to? put it all together in language, to end up talking about something that just happens (ideally) as if it were something you have to try to do. On the other hand, a guy like this amateur (in the video) obviously _isn't_ releasing the hands, so maybe doing it deliberately until he gets the feel of it, until it becomes second nature, is the right thing in this instructional situation.

Hmm...well, you have to think about? how it is that great players come to articulate their ideas about the swing. To one person it's "letting physics release the club passively"; to another, it's feeling the hands rip through impact; another may wish he had three right hands to release through the ball; to another, it feels like the intentional use of the hands; but in fact all may be doing exactly, or fundamentally, the same thing.

This seems awful advice to all but a? rank beginner. Let physics release the club-once you start using active hands, its so hard to time. Ive used both methods and by far the easiest is to let physics release the club.

The hands are used in many sports. The correct action is based on the individual players timing .It not going to matter if you are a leg player, body player or hands player. Timing off . It depends on the player. Some people do it naturally as force is transmitted through the body and out to the clubhead, some don't. Some have to learn to use their hands to create speed. Certainly Snead? himself thought so, as he says here and elsewhere.

one thing i forgot to mention is that snead "does" use his body and legs to generate power! he's so natural he thinks it's his hands, yes you can generate more power? and extra clubhead speed through lag,but at a price,accuracy! the straightest hitters have fairly passive hands,kite for instance,compared to seve, you need to connect your body to the clubhead to transfer the momentum created by your body and legs at impact it's physics mass x velocity = momentum,you need both

I've seen the explanations for NG, and I just don't think the advantage of making one plane with the arms and club? outweighs the tension and artificiality of it. For some, it works really well. But IMHO, the hands and arms are built in a way that makes the conventional hold the best balance of advantages and disadvantages. OTOH, I'd never tell anybody not to try something they think might be a breakthrough for them, especially when it's been proven by at least some good players.

As for Moe Norman, well...it's hard to argue with success so great that top-level tour pros would say this guy was the most consistent striker they ever saw, at least as good as Hogan, according to some. However, theoretically, I'm not so convinced that the wrists are that much of a nightmare, except to the extent that you can make the movement of any body "part" (because "part" is just an idea we? use for convenience anyway) a nightmare if you overthink it enough.

Keep in mind when you're considering the question, though, that Snead was one of the greatest teachers ever--and? also that Hogan's approach was nowhere near as mechanical as his reputation. It was what later teachers did with Hogan's ideas that gives Hogan much of his reputation (look at how relatively short a book Five Lessons is, for instance).

Actually, I think that's a very valid and very interesting (not to mention perpetually unsolved) question. One view would say that the guy who is possibly the greatest natural player in the history of golf finds the swing so? simple that whatever he says isn't so useful for the average player, while Hogan's "assembly of parts" approach will work. The opposite view would say that Snead is exactly the guy you want to listen to, because you want your swing to be that complication-free.

power and consistency come from everything working together. timing and rhythm. golf has? always revolved around these aspects, much the same as every ball sport. you couldn't make a basket, throw a strike, kick a goal, or complete a pass without timing and rhythm. there are no secrets in golf, just like there are no secrets in basketball, baseball, football, etc. some days it comes easier than others. that's the nature of every athletic activity.

Toski, Flick, and Love II had the? right idea: The further you get from your hands, the only part of the body that contacts the club, the more your parts move in reaction and the less they should be trying to "create" anything. Your torso should move to respond to the swinging motion or the intent to swing arms, hands, and club. The thing that Snead did so beautifully was to stay completely in tune with how the club wanted to move, through the sensitivity in hands and forearms.

You are correct. Read "Mr. Hogan, The man I knew". First hand evidence that there was no actual "secret". (time magazine wanted Mr. Hogan to come up with a magical "secret" move to sell more copies. So Mr. Hogan gave the cupped left wrist move that helped correct HIS tendency to hook.) Don't you think his secret would have been found by now? by video analysis or by someone falling? on it by chance.

Actually, we have no idea where that ball even ended up. Just saying. We think that was a great? swing but we don't know. Hogan could of hit that one hard left and hit some old lady in the head for all we know. We think we're seeing a swing that's perfection, but in reality we might have an elderly lady down and blood pumping all over the place. Tom Bertrand explained how Hogan used his elbows to control the release of the clubface through impact and as contrary as it seems against most golf swing doctrine, it's worked wonders for me, and I was already an 11 handicap playing for 26 years. Where as most all of our favorite pro's would have 'flipped' the? clubface through impact to some degree or other, look at the image with the clubhead just past impact. The clubhead is held far more square than most anyone else.

What I'm looking at is the universal--and I mean universal--characteristic of the great swinger to have the trailing forearm under the plane of the? lead forearm from halfway down until just before impact, and the shoulders closed during this time too, with the lower body opening. I just don't see any consistent exceptions to this. Even Nicklaus, when he revamped in '79-'80, cultivated that feeling deliberately and said it was the best ballstriking of his life--that's JACK NICKLAUS'S life.

The on plane forearm is a very important geometrical contribution for the golf physics. It can offer? an on plane force through impact, but when it's off plane, the forces are going in the wrong direction, so (in order to make a good shot) you mustn't use that power source. Tiger is a true centrifugal force swinger. In this shot he had a completely passive right arm and he only used the centrifugal pull of the left side. Geometry in this case is not in his favour, but he is Tiger...

Think about this...Hogan never had a back, hip or knee issue (disregarding the accident of course). A motion that evolved into pure symmetry. I would love to talk more in depth one day with V J about Hogan. I'm in the process of developing a pretty neat project for all golfers in which Hogan? plays a major role. Think of it as a falling to the left side (through-swing pivot) as the pressure of the turning of the body (spine) gave Hogan a feeling of both his feet corkscrewing into the ground? with pressure on the back inside heel and front inside ball of the foot. Once the corkscrew could go no further (lower spine), then the lateral motion of the lower body would occur while the upper spine finished it's rotation. The real question is, did the circumstances of his accident help him arrive there or was he evolving to this regardless. There is mention here of Hogan's lateral lower spine (pelvis if you will) movement in initiating the downswing. This movement occurred not at the top of the? back-swing but of course before he completed the full rotation of his upper spine (torso). The lateral motion was not and never should contrived. It is a reaction to the coiling of the lower spine...

I agree with the comments here as Hogan's real secret was in how he pivoted which he truly figured out. Remember he mentioned? that he evolved to the point where he felt his entire swing through his feet. Think of it as every part of the body feeling a sense of neutrality and harmonious symmetry throughout the swing. I agree with you that that is really a distinct action here, and I even remember reading Jack's own words about it somewhere--something to the effect that if he was going to replant it anywhere other than where it was at? address, he'd much rather see it moving toward the target than away from it. You probably also know that he was adamant about a lateral move (Lead would say slightly to the _right_ of the target, since you're turned) before any distinct clearing.

Here in this interview you'll notice it's the narrator who names Grout, then there's a cut to Nicklaus saying "he," but Nicklaus himself would not have known how this film was edited.? Check the top of Hogans head; approx. -2" each way! You can't say anything about Hogan, 1P, etc., without somebody getting bent out of shape, but the vagaries of lining up the camera aside, it's true that Hogan was sometimes on the shoulder plane, sometimes above, sometimes below. We're talking about slight variations, mostly related to length of swing. On the very short swings, he was slightly? below; on his longest swings, he was slightly above, if (and this is critical) you go from the shoulder socket to the middle of the butt of the club.

I don't think he created it. If you watch Snead, Demmart, Nelson, even Bobby Jones. They all had components of SnT they all tried to keep the shoulder center on the ball and got power from the hip center moving with the back swing. They could never figure out how snead could turn his shoulders 120 degree's It was becuse he let his rt leg straighten. his hip center moved and it? allowed a massive turn. Hogan did it. Hogan wrote a 13 page letter to Pat Mahoney head pro at Pasatiempo in 1948 the year before his accident., I have a copy. He never wanted to move off the ball with his head. Only Hip center. Not Shoulder Center. He wanted rt leg to straighten. Left side to sag in. It looked like a rev pivot. But like the snt there is nothing rev about it. totally wrong. hogan did not reverse pivot like the stack and tilt. hogan moved his center/core slightly to the right to start his swing, then aggressively to the lft through to the finish. his hips turned and moved towards the target before his backswing was completed, BUT, his upper body and shoulders were behind the ball at the? top of the swing. so no reverse pivot and no stack and tilt. the main thing that everyone misses about hogan is how the core moves and slings the arms.

The barrel is meant to serve as a visual aid for your lower body to rotate; as can clearly be seen his hips rotate AT impact, not from the top of the backswing. Dont start the downswing by rotating the hips, instead slide them slightly until weight has been transferred then rotate the hips. Punch elbow means the right elbow is to the side of the hip pitch elbow is more in front of the belly. Punch elbow works well for hitters and leads to an earlier release of the angles than pitch. In? a pure swinging action pitch elbow leads to a later snap release ala Garcia and Hogan. Holmes is a big powerful lump and I am pretty sure is a hitter not swinger with his right arm straightening by tricep power rather than inertly thrown out by the pivot.With that action Punch elbow works better.

The interesting part regarding TGM and the various hinging actions is that with a good neutral? grip they are achieved by making various swings which are suppose to have the effect of those hinging actions.Confusing huh?If you finish high,low,mid level depending on the desired shot you will find your hands wind up in the hinged positions mentioned by TGM instructors.Example if you hit a high shot by finishing high in the follow through you will find you end up with a reverse roll.

Re practicing for the first time in five years, even he admitted that was true. By the late '70s he had started to get really imprecise with contact and was overemphasizing some of his signature moves in a detrimental way. '86, that's a different animal there. I'm going on what Nicklaus himself has said and written in multiple places that he consciously revamped his swing in several important respects: standing taller at address, getting a bit more centered on the ball (rather than radically behind it), making the backswing a bit? more rotational (arms folding earlier at the elbows), all of which were intended to make a shallower approach through the ball on an inside path and a full release without dragging the club through.

If you look at his approach shot into the 15th green at Augusta during the final rd of the '75 Masters and his approach shot into 15 in the final rd in '86, it's the exact same swing, from the exact same spot, with the exact same result. He tweaked some things later w/ Jim Flick, but not like Hogan or Faldo

Yeah, he did this when he was younger. What'd be really interesting is a meta-analysis of the midcareer changes made by several prominent players, some of the all-time greats and some just very good--Hogan, Nicklaus ('79-'80), Faldo, Price, O'Meara, et al. I'm actually making notes for a book project. Strong similarities include an emphasis on plane,? a more unified action (NOT "taking the hands out of the swing, as so commonly misstated), and controlling an out-of-control backswing.

Funny how that tee shot? on 18 destroyed the cocoon of confidence he'd been enveloped in since the '04 Masters. I think Dustin Johnson? succumbed to that and so did Nick Watney. I think you have to embrace championship opportunities and feed off of them. Nicklaus certainly did. Woods does. i'm a 'Tiger guy' (the off course bs is another conversation) precisely because of what you've described. For the same reason,? I'm a Nicklaus guy. I'm not a front runner, but, I have a tremendous appreciation for preparation, athletic intelligence, and an innate ability to execute under pressure. I think there is something to be said for the athlete who, even though he's favored, can still make it happen. The 'underdog' has it easy. ie Rocco and the 'nothing to lose' '08 Open.

Re taking care of technical flaws before they kill you: That's one of the things I admire about? TW's game, even while finding him disgusting as a person. He really does work his ass off, and despite critics, I think it's usually on the right things. Right now, though, he's getting back into that huge down-move with his head and upper body that make him wild when he really goes after a shot, and it's gonna be really hard for him to play well for four straight rounds with that.

You're right; Norman's lapses were consistent. In his case, these were manifested in a technical flaw that he just never bothered to fix--which is just another way of not being _quite_ at the level of a Hogan or Nicklaus, whom you could not IMAGINE doing such a thing ("eh, I'll just leave that alone and maybe it won't come up"). And btw,? that's not the same thing as saying the lapses were CAUSED by the technical flaw. More like the other way around.

...and, it does seem like that's kind? of a defense mechanism sometimes. You can always say you lost while trying to hit that 40-yard cut with a 3-wood around the trees and over the lake "because I was trying to win the tournament, dammit"--when a smarter play would result in an 80% chance of a tie and an 18% chance of a win, with only a 2% chance of a loss. Or whatever. Even Tiger could use a little more of that Jackish mentality at times, but mostly he's got it.

I do think, though, that the problem is really similar with Mickelson and Norman. Also, re the Rocco mentality: That may have helped him become as good as he could be, and he's rich because of it, and has had a good life with a lot of travel and a lot of fun. I just think guys like Nicklaus and Woods have all that--fun, good times, etc.--but still play with some kind of real urgency that seems lacking in literally almost everybody? almost all the time these days, other than Woods.

Also: Love's dad was a crack teacher, as you know, but I wonder whether teaching a lot of amateurs tends to give? you the sports psychologist mentality of a guy like Rotella--again, a likeable guy who has some good ideas, but much of his material seems geared toward the Rocco kind of mentality--happy to be there, win once in a while when it's your turn, etc....

Also, re '96 Masters (Faldo and Norman): I agree Norman blew it, but I'm telling you, going into that final round I was apoplectic about how reporters were talking. A six-shot lead really is not insurmountable, not even close, especially in a major. You can shoot 74 hitting it about like you do when you shoot 69,? and another guy--especially a guy like Faldo--can shoot 67 and pass you. Having said that...a smarter way of playing would've sealed it for Norman.

Sometimes it really is a technical problem or a problem of being smart about what you're doing. You could say the same thing about David Duval. To me the difference between the 1B's of the past 20 years and the 1B's of the Nicklaus era is money; plain and simple. Talent and instruction, yes. Ridiculous advantages in conditioning and equipment, absolutely. But hit-you-in-the-teeth toughness? Not so much. Think about how happy ol' jolly Rocco was to be there at Torrey in the Open playoff, and how jolly? he was afterward--when a bold shot to the 72nd might've ended in a birdie, and when a hacking bogey in sudden death (enabled by his insistence on the same tee shot with the same club that had failed before) allowed a routine par to win.

So maybe I? should've gone back farther, since I'm really talking about the kind of player who didn't have Dad's insurance business or a corporate golf job to go to if they failed. I'm talking about guys who had the killer instinct because if they failed, they'd have to go back and pump gas or flip burgers, and be happy to have even that job. Tiger's the only guy out there who plays every week with the urgency of a guy who's gonna have to sell sweaters if he doesn't make it.

well, i certainly don't play competitively at that level. But, I don't know how else to describe his short comings in the biggest events. Technically, he did possess a fatal swing flaw that reared it's ugly head at the '84 US Open and the '86 Masters, each time on the 72nd hole. Whatever you want to call it, the guy just? flat didn't get it done. Great guy, super talent, just lacks the championship resume' in my view.

? i'd say that's a pretty good comparison (major results not withstanding). It seems Mickelson, as with Norman before him, just goes out and plays, and if it's good enough to win, great, but if not, then, aw shucks, that's golf and I relish the opportunity to give it another try next year. I just don't see a passion to be great. I think Norman wanted to be great, and maybe that pressure manifested itself in majors. his place in history sure could've been a lot different.
