The much maligned Pedro Diniz holds off Olivier Panis for much of the race, to take 5th place at the Nurburgring in his Arrows-Yamaha.
Jacques Villeneuve achieved his 7th win of the 1997 season to take the championship lead from Michael Schumacher.

That's true, but as Martin Brundle points out, the Arrows is ill-handling as well. By the end Pedro has a train behind him and has fallen further behind? Berger.

Not necessarily, because while Panis appears to be in the quicker car, he is also very ragged at times, allowing Diniz to pull away a little. KERS and DRS do not launch one car straight past another if they both have a similarly performing car and the lead car uses it intelligently (Webber vs. Hamilton in Korea last year a case? in point).

I think Jarno's got his vineyards to keep him busy now :p Yeah, I'm with you on the reliability thing, and yeah, I think McLaren was the better bet in the long run, Coulthard wasted the other seat for years. Are you sure overtaking's still a problem though, what with the tyre rules and the fact cars can actually follow each other closely? for the most part? Push-to-pass buttons would have meant this Arrows\Prost battle would have been over in a lap...

The train will be even? less common now that poor Jarno's out of a job. Damon took the money and ran with Arrows in '97. He could have been sitting in an Adrian Newey McLaren. Nevertheless, some of his qualifying AND race performances were impressive depending on whether Yamaha could get the keyboard in the back working. DRS and Pirelli are the saviours of Formula 1. Sad to say, but "natural" overtaking just wasn't working. KERS is still neither here nor there in terms of effect.

Well, when you're qualifying 2nd in a Jordan behind MSc's Ferrari, it's going to be difficult to hold that position through? race stints when the car is not set up for outright speed. DH had the same problem in the 1997 Arrows. Qualifying and race results are vastly different. Of course the "train" is far less common now what with DRS\KERS (and often two DRS zones per track).

The problem with Jarno was that his race speed often lagged miles behind his qualifying speed, even more so than most other one-lap specialists. I think other drivers became irritated because they got stuck so often behind what became known as the Trulli Train. It was felt that even though Jarno was in a slower car, he should have been pushing harder than he was - and at times, they were right. He could be great on his day, but all too often that? day was Saturday. Pity really.

Speaking of Prost in the late 90s, I never understood the Trulli hate. Yeah, he had a tendency towards one-lap wonder and was variable, but you don't win and get multiple podiums without talent. He trod the "crappy Minardi, remarkable qualifying and racing" path before Alonso. Probably the "power steering" stuff with Lotus\Caterham. Unsure why Heikki gets such a? pass given his crap showing at Renault/McLaren. Rather him than the likes of Karthikeyan coming back repeatedly though.

Olivier seemed, at first, to be getting it back at the end of '97. But his driving in '98 was way below his best and it wasn't just because of that awful car he was given. By late '99,? he seemed more like his old self, but by then his momentum had gone, his relationship with Prost had gone and therefore his seat had gone. Showed flashes of his old self at BAR and Toyota, but you're right, never again had that pep in his step which got him up there with Schumacher and Villenueve.

Neither did Panis after the Canada '97 crash come to think of it (I think in his prime, he? would have made the pass in this particular battle). Then again, he gave JV a good run for his money at BAR and wasn't completely useless at Toyota.

Glad to see someone finally put Hamilton in that bracket, where he deserves to be. Needs to regain that level head he had back in '07 though. Anyway, back to Diniz: I actually think that 2000 wasn't one of his better years, but from 1997-99 he was very handy as a midfielder. He outperformed Alesi a Hell of a lot in '99,? which in itself is a statement of ability, but a shame he didn't seem to kick on afterwards. I think the high-speed rear wing loss in Brazil freaked him a bit...

True, he was a solid midfield driver in 2000: just lacking ultimate pace.? Then again, not everyone in the field can be a Schumacher or Alonso or Hamilton.

I think it was mostly on the tires. It was Bridgestone's first year in F1 and Goodyear had decades of F1 tire development experience. The Prost/Ligier was able to look for its tires as well as being fast on them, but Arrows was the "what if" of the Bridgestone-shod cars because of a sheer lack of power (around 80? bhp less some reckoned).

True, but the chassis performance seem to degrade very badly in the second half of a race. Hill (and sometimes Diniz) would often qualify well, run near the front before the pitstops then drop off in pace very rapidly (something which didn't occur? in Hungary of course, until the mechanical problem).

Just imagine the damage Hill and Diniz can do if TWR had those Mugen Honda engines. The? Arrows chassis was already dynamite when it came to handling and balance, the Yamaha sadly was a squib.

Though it looks like the Arrows' tyres are bad (note the oversteer and progressively earlier braking), either that or the chassis had some problems in the second half of the race ..Diniz would have been a? remarkable third if he'd stayed ahead of Frentzen and Berger after the stops.

back when f1 cars looked like f1 cars. nice and wide and proper wings and good year? slicks though both panis and diniz were on bridgestones. by the way diniz was a far better driver than anyone ever thought he was. always good at spa in particular. definately no slouch.
