@AshokaAnandaeSaha And for more historical trivia: Unlike Isshin-ryu, Ittatsu-ryu,? Ikkaku-ryu and Uchida-ryu was actually created by two senior members of SMR. The first two ryu was created sometime in the late 1600's early 1700's, and Uchida-ryu in the late 1800's. Again these traditions were taught alongside SMR rather than being a part of SMR. @AshokaAnandaeSaha However, it? should be noted that SMR-Jodo and Isshin still are two seperate traditions. Isshin-ryu wasnt incorporated into SMR but simply associated with it. We call Isshin-ryu, ikkaku ryu, ittatsu ryu, Uchida Ryu "Fuzoku Ryuha" or "assimilated arts" and they are all seperate arts that has "tagged along" SMR-ryu during the years. Today of course, as far as I know, the various group-masters of SMR do not teach those arts seperately like Shirashi did with Isshin-ryu.

@AshokaAnandaeSaha Isshin is indeed older but there was never a historical relationship. In the late 1800's one of the headmasters of Shinto Muso-ryu, Shirashi Hanjiro, recieved a full license in Isshin-ryu. As far as we know this was the? first time any headmaster of SMR recieved such a license in Isshin-ryu. Shiraishi taught Isshin-ryu alongside SMR-jodo in his dojo in Fukuoka to his students, including Shimizu Takaji and Otofuji Ichizo.

That was against the swordsman Sasaki Kojir? and not Muso Gonnosuke. Sasaki was defeated and killed by Musashi in a duel around 1612. Musashi used a wooden sword carved from an oar. Muso Gonnosuke was? defeated but allowed to live. The second Gonnosuke-Musashi duel seems to be more legend than fact however.

I have trained over 25 years in the Bujinkan (run by Hatsumi Masaaki) and? there is no Kusarigama whatsoever in any of the Ryuha in the Bujinkan so your really are talking rubbish. i also doubt hatsumi sensei personally taught you kusarigama for any period of time like the gentlemen in this video. Your comments clearly show your lack of understanding of a Koryu, another schools style of use with a weapon. These men have beening using Kuarigama longer than you

OK. How long have you been training? Where did you receive your training? How old? are you? What kind of training with the kusarigama do you do? If you have something constructive to add then please add it. If you are going to hold them responsible for showing you the full breadth of their curriculum including variations and with both hands in a 40 second clip then you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

Besides, anyone with more than superficial knowledge about kusarigama knows the wooden handle of most would be iron reinforced (bands & strips) so it's definitely possible? to block a katana with (certain parts of) the handle.

I'm not sure? what clip you are watching, but he isn't using the wooden handle to stop the blade. What he IS doing in this clip is using the attached blade to stop the sword. He isn't using a kusarigama with a metal blade in this video, but a wooden training version.

It's always hilarious that sportsmen usually talk biggest about real martial application. Which is even more funny, when they are talking about martial arts like Daitoryu,? a branch of the Takeda Ryu, one of the oldest and well known warrior-clans of Japan. The clan got strong and influential through creating the Aiki-principle. And if actual war isn't testemony enough, think about the fact, that Kano Jigoro was highly influenced by Saigo Shiro (Saigo-ha Daitoryu-Aiki-Jujutsu).

agree, in warrior cultures they would play these "games" grappling, kendo, sticky hands, etc in order to develop certain skills without disabiling each other nowadays, theres really no good way to utilize these techniques in a realistic scenario at full contact, no technique barred, life and death stuff, unless you want to go to prison for a while. which, as debilitating and dangerous as they are, is probably good. unless u? freeze and can't deliver the decisive blow when it counts

I will agree that aikido seems to be the? only exception, judo, and tae kwon do especially seem to be more sport oriented. Honestly aikido and jujutsu should never be separate in my eyes. especially at higher levels of either art you begin learning the other.

Personally practising aikido you become really aware of your body; in addition in rel fight U get a technique of approaching to fight (rotation and excetera ). Of course in a real fight you will never make a perfect iakhuammi iriminage, but for example you will be able to use something similar to a iriminage. This is just a personal idea - sorry for any grammar mistakes, english isn't my? first language-.

Yah I dont know. The weapon was first brought into Japan by Portugese tradesmen in the 1540's. The Japanese copied the design directly from the Western Matchlock. And I honestly dont know what type of ammo? the matchlock used. I recommend you google 16th century matchlock rifles for more info.

I like the music because it is appears to be more in synch with nature or harmony with nature, not synthetic. The balance in Hitachi Sensei's movements is exquisite and are truly practical in application as opposed? ot the ritualistic movements of modern sword arts.

Shinto music can sound pretty nice but? if its shitty it just sounds like a bunch of random noises. There are lots of nice traditonal Japanese music, such as Taiko drumming. Thats great for martial arts videos.

Show me historically where judo (and thus also BJJ) has connections to the specific school of Daito Ryu. Kito Ryu and Tenshin Shinyo Ryu for sure, but haven't? seen any connection to Daito Ryu. And in regards to striking, it's always been part of jujutsu (atemi waza). In fact, so old style of jujutsu resembled Kempo more than what is considered "jujutsu" today.

that is not true .. judo and bjujinkan are both from jujutus , alot of jujutsu is like aikido , and aikijutus... even aiki jujutsu is from jujutusu.. alot of things come from jujutsu. Striking and punching art come form something? else.

My understanding was that Kano was taught by Saigo Tanomo and Shiro Saigo, who were early generations of the now Daito system(although it was not actually called Daito ryu at the time). From part of that training and of course others is how judo came about. I may be wrong. Ill be the first to admit it. However, That is what I was taught. So what I? was getting at was that they all can trace to each other. maybe indirectly. but they all interconnect at one point and time.

but it is also said aikijujutsu came from jujutsu, i read this on a daito ryu website. there is aiki, there is jujutsu, and then there is aikijujutsu. i wouldn't say aikijujutsu is richer than any other art, as they are all unique to the circumstances? of their creation. even kondo sensei says tokumine takeda told him not to teach people the correct way to do the techniques, so who knows if you learn real aikijujutsu?

Aikido, Judo, even? Hapkido and Gracie/Brazilian Jujitsu ALL trace to Diato-ryu Aiki-jujutsu. That is why you will see some similarities. Each has focused on certain parts of the Diatoryu catalogs and made an entire system(s) of them. That alone should show how diverse DR is. Kevin
