Same thing happened to me a couple of months ago. It was sat in the middle of a track munching on something? so obviously saw me before i saw it. I had my camera in my pocket but didnt want to freak it out by reaching for it so i just sat down. I could have sworn it shrugged its shoulders before it carried on eating lol Are you still wanting a Micro SD card? I have a 4GB one that i dont use so you can have it if you want. Peace

Ah, that's a shame; would have been a lot easier for me to sort you out with a SD card than CompactFlash. Compact Flash are somewhat obsolete now, tricky to tell what the max size card it will accept will be - does it? say in your manual? It's not obvious from the Tech specs I've found.

Exactly my friend!? We are all connected and are brothers and sisters. Once you show the forest some respect the animals, plants & trees pick it up. I good example of this was a squirrel let me watch him from 4 meters away and wasn't fussed at all.

I know it sounds daft but i thank trees and wildlife etc. Especially if i see something twitchy like a squirrel and its sitting there watching me watching it. Once you start doing that i think your aura changes and gets smoothed out and wildlife doesnt see you as so much of a threat so is? willing to stick around more than usual. Often closer as well. This is a cash-crop plantation. Non-native trees to Ireland. Those plantations are doing a lot of damage to the land, but so does Coillte when they remove them after? 35 - 40 years. We should advocate planting of more NATIVE trees.

Sorry for your loss my friend, I've seen a few old growth areas disappear and it's never nice to see. It is society. Either we cut down the forest for homes and goods, or we over protect it with fire controls and the forest suffers from lack of the cleansing effects of natural flame. Hopefully the loggers will clean up what they cut and whats left will return to a natural state in a year or two. Love the spot you found, it definitely has a middle earth charm.. Take care.. : )?

See it all the time in Kielder forest. I had a walk planned where I would walk twice the distance I normally did in order to get to an old ruin hidden in the woods that some friends had visited once. So carrying around 80kgs ( the knees could take it back then) I treked for over 7 hours to find the whole area deforrested! Had to walk back to another woodland,? where I sat for 2 days eating and cursing forrestry workers

Unlucky mate. You'll have to get the hammock & tarp out of mothball's, that way you can have a regular spot, but without all the hard work of? building a shelter, & if they (the bas%$£"s) do cut it down, at least yuo can move on with no problem.

Unfortunate, but this is quite common everywhere, in my local woods (south east England) the same is done and Wales, they usually do it to create new growth, if you chat with the foresters or wardens they can tell you? where they are planning to do this. Bummer about your camp though it looked like it was cosy (although maybe a little draughty now).

Your right mate it is society, all in the persuit of that thing we made up called money. Don't let it get? you down, that's (sadly) what it's there for... as in that wood is obviously owned by (and is for) a logging company. I wouldn't get your hopes up aswell when you think they can't get their machinery into certain place within a wood, I have seen them get machinery in to fell trees in seemingly inaccessible places. We've deforested Britain :(

When I walk outside in the fall with a cool breeze and maybe 50-55 degrees temperature I never feel better. Makes me want to? take off running or hiking. Beautiful scenery here.

Good suggestion,? Ashley! Thankfully a week after this was filmed i '' Mastered '' blowing an ember into flame! The key was blow very softly in the beginning. What i did in the video was blow way, way too hard in the beginning which basicly destroyed the Charcloth, Opps!

Good effort Ciarán, your out there practising that's the main thing. Thanks for being honest and showing people it's not all full of successes. My only recommendations would be: Try and elevate the tinder bundle off the damp floor when lighting, even if it's on? a platform of sticks or a dry stone etc. Secondly go for a bigger bundle of tinder, obviously this depends on what you can find but remember you can make some good stuff using Feathersticks also :) All the best, Ashley Cawley.

I love real life problems,great film! Just imagine boiling a liter of water. Once it is cooking it will stay at 100C it will not get hotter until all the water is turned into gas but meanwhile to do that you have to? add loads of energy. And 100C is not enough to ignite most stuff. So the charcloth must provide enough energy to evaporate the moist from a spot and once that spot burns the material must provide enough energy to dry out and ignite the surrounding stuff. Take car my friend

Good point Ciaran. If you blow the charcloth slowly and steadily only drying up the surrounding grass the flame should appear. Better to just keep at it and learn in your own time. It's easy for us to tell you what to do but it's no substitute for actually being there and understanding the conditions you're dealing with. You're out there? doing it and learning all the time mate, through your own experiences you will suss it down to a fine art. Good luck fella

I did bud, I think the main reasons i failed was that in the beginning i blew the charcloth way way to hard and that actually broke it up giving me basicly no ember, I need to take my time in the beginning slowly building? up the heat and oxygen :)

Thanks bud, I actually had an Epiphany the other night about the tinder bundle. I remembered that? i had incredible success with dead Tussock grass or a mixture of Tussock Grass & Dead Fern ( Managed to get flame from charcloth in 3 seconds ). Trying to get Bracon to catch from an ember is pretty darn tricky but adding it to a flame it's fantastic stuff! A big bundle of dry grass is the perfect tinder bundle in my opinion :)

thats? the one thing about bushcraft. theres always something new to learn. Even if its something you never really thought about. Also if you start rocking a folding saw/pouch/axe a second utility belt that doesnt hold up your trousers becomes very useful. More so if you find your crossing public areas etc.

Believe it or not last night in my dream i realised what i was doing wrong bud, I usually always use dead dry grass as my tinder bundle or a mixture of grass and dead ferns. In this video i use only dead ferns which i think is alot more harder to light than dead dry grass. Usually with the grass i can get it lite in a couple seconds. Never been? able to do that with ferns though.

Use your knife? to shave a few sticks, either feather sticks or shavings. Just make sure you get the dry stuff from the centre of the piece of wood to ensure it lighting easier. Just a little update for you bud, The last couple of days i've been carrying my knife on my right hand side and it's much much easier to draw and put back into the sheath? :) I always thought Ray Mears had his knife on the wrong way but in fact it was me xD Oh well atleast i've now got plenty oh experience with it on my left hand side :) Cheers for the little heads up bud!

I strike with the spine of my knife bud, i see what you mean but i'm always aware of where the knife is going and have never cut my self in this way, I also do it that way because the sheath can wobble about when removing the blade so i hold it while drawing the knife. This also keeps my left arm out of the way while doing this, It may seem alittle fast because i've been doing it for donkeys( Well as long as i've had the mora clipper anyway) Thanks? for your concern though buddy :)

I agree, this was filmed when i was a complete beginner to hammocking and tarps / ponchos. Now i have the DD tarp, Modified my webbing, and am set up very well now. This whole? video was just an experiment to see if it would work, and it didn't. Thanks for your comment, Wulamallessin! :)

This setup will absolutely fail, in any rain ... First, if any part of your hammock is exposed to rain, you will end up swimming ... second, yourr suspension lines are like sponges and even if you had a? much larger tarp, rain will be wicked down the webbing and into the hammock ... The correct way to stay dry is to get a tarp that is 10 feet square (3 meters on a side) and center the hammock ... you must insert caribiners or metal rings or links in the suspension webbing, but under the tarp !!

If we stop learning, we quit growing (metephorically). Personally, I like ponchos for their multiple uses. Anything that servers more then one purpose gets a consideration for inclusion. not having the center eyelets...one configuration you might consider would the 'diamond'...throw the poncho over the ridge line, prusik knot opposing corners to the ridge and tighten. This will get your hammock completely under the protection. It does make centering the poncho very easy.? And I might suggest folding the hood over on the hammock and tying it closed, to help with that big HOLE the hood causes. For diamond pattern traps, just check around You Tube to see what I mean

Well Mike, I don't know if you seen the news but all the forest on the other side of the mountain is on fire right now, And the Fire service said? it was started deliberatly which really ticks me off. They say the fire is about 3 miles wide. I just pray that it doesn't catch Donard forest because i basicly live inside the forest and all of the wildlife live in this forest so nervous times.

Well done for your first! Keep at it and they will get better and better. Soon you'll learn how to film while being intuned and within a mind set as to not disturb the surroundings. One small tip- slow the side to side camera movements down a bit. I was getting a bit sea sick LOL :-)?

Cheers Mike! It's a beautifull area, I'm very lucky actually i live well outside the town aswell so that's a bonus :) I bought the Scout Hammock bud it's fantastic but i think to get the most i? need a mat of some sort to spread out the hammock to not make it not as narrow and also for heat.
